Can daytime heating cause thunderstorms and how can the storms become
severe?

Not a meteorolist, but I`d say yes ...

Wunderground reported for my area:

Temperatu 66°F / 19°C | Humidity: 94% | Pressu 30.09in / 1019hPa |
Conditions: Clear | Wind Direction: NE | Wind Speed: 1mph / 2km/h |
Updated: 4:50 AM CEST

Conditions some 20 minutes ago were reported as

Temperatu 75°F / 24°C | Humidity: 65% | Pressu 30.12in / 1020hPa |
Conditions: Clear | Wind Direction: WSW | Wind Speed: 5mph / 7km/h |
Updated: 9:20 AM CEST

Although the humidity has gone down in a four and a half hours it is still
at a high level. Since we can expect temps go up into the high 80s/mid 90s
the chances for a thunderstorm are predicted at 60%. With a drier heat like
we had last week the chances for a ts is much lower.
Chances vary though with the landscape though ... the area west of here
(Black Forrest) has a higher risk for thunderstorms and they are most
likely to be severe.

Talk to you later ... Hans from Germany

Google is your friend. I got nearly 3 million responses to a google
of "thunderstorm cause" in .23 seconds. You can do the same.

Daytime heating is a major contributor to afternoon thunderstorms. The
increased sun means increased temperatures making the air rise ... as the
air rises the moisture in that air form clouds .. the more heat the more
convection the bigger the clouds.... of course you need moisture in this
process so the more moisture you have the greater chance of the storm
becoming bigger .. bigger storms more unstable. Many T storms will setup
along some mountains in the afternoon, where you not only have solar heating
but orographic land features make that parcel of air go up and thereby
making a cloud. Things that make the storm become unstable can be a
combination of many things .. like more moisture, heat, a different and
colder airmass mixing with the warmer, moister air.
