For the folks in Minnesota (or similar places in the mid-west US) it
doesn't sound impressive.

However, in The Netherlands, a country with a very moderate climate,
it is! On the morning of March 4th a temperature of -20.7 C was
recorded as a national low. Today a national high of 21.7 C was
rercorded. A swing of over 42 degrees Celsius.

It is a new national record - this temperature swing within a calender
month.

Evert, I'm not sure what you mean.. do you mean that the 21.7C was the
highest max. ever recorded for March? At what station because according
to my data Gilze-Rijen reported 20.9C (which is still quite nice).
Regarding to the absolute highest max, De Bilt reported 21.8C on
1989-03-28. Gilze-Rijen reported 22.1C on the that day.

But indeed, yesterday was a nice day..

Richard, Evert means the 'temperature swing" within a calendar month is a
new national record. Meaning the range between ms 20.7 °C and + 21.7 °C.

It is quite extraordinairy, yes, And we sure had a lovely day .

Overcast right now -- however sun's trying to peep through!!

It seems fairly clear to me. I think that Evert is saying that 42.4C is
the greatest temperature range ever recorded in the Netherlands within a
single calendar month.

Just read that the old record ( ie biggest temperature-range within a month)
is from March 1931. The range was 41.1 C. March 10th ms 17,8° C (Warnsveld)
and March 20th + 23,3° C at Maastricht.

Right! I get it now. I was mistakingly reading the post as if these were

I find this all fascinating. Does anyone know what the equivalent UK
record is?

This is interesting. I know Madison (WI, USA) has had a
55-degree (C) swing in a month (March, 1962).

One particularly intense front in, iirc, North Dakota had a 100 F
difference from one end of the block to the other. (David Fultz
mentioned that one to me in the 1980's, example from much earlier.)

If I remember the years right, in the early 1980's Chicago
set record high for December at, then, about 66 F, after having
approached, but not beaten, the record low with ca. -20 F earlier
that month. So, approaching 50 C swing within the month, just
in my period of memory. Record for a day was something like 70 F
(40 C), from -20 F to +50 morning to evening (wind chill made it
100 F range, if you believe wind chills).
