I just took this one at random and found that the record for Seattle
on August 15th was 96 degrees F set in 1942. And, I don't think it
was anywhere near 84 last Wednesday. (the high was 73 today)

I'm at a loss to figure out what that is that you're referencing. If
you go to:
http://www.weather.com/weather/clima...m_ite=CityPage

you'll see that the average record high temperature for August in
Seattle is about 93. The hottest ever was in 1981 at 99.

Seattle is about 93. The hottest ever was in 1981 at 99.

Oh, that Seattle. :-)

That is an interesting page. Some of the lower record
high temperature for day of the year have stood since before 1900.

And there is a 12 degree difference between highest and
lowest day of the year record high during the month of August.

These two facts seem to make the day of the year high
temperature records in summer less remarkable.

I also noticed some of those anomalies leading me to think that some
of those record highs in the 80's aren't correct.
Most of the cities' record highs for a month such as August I think
are much closer than that. I used Tulsa's record highs for the month
earlier. Hottest August day was 115 in 1936 and the lowest high for
the month was 106 set in 1935.
Mind you, that's 9 degrees difference so, perhaps, that 12
differential above isn't that odd after all.

Yes, that is indeed interesting. You will see that the number I posted
was taken directly from an official NWS site, not weather.com. I can't
verify either the temperature reading posted for 15 August, nor can I
verify the record temperature which was reported either. Also, there's
no way to say whether the same site data is referenced. If the
weather.com data is correct, then there's been a mistake.
That's not really something I can do anything about.

They are probably correct, the Pacific is COLD and if
there is an offshore breeze, you need a jacket. (see average temps)

It isn't odd, it is what should be expected with less than
200 observations.

But there may not be too many places where a lot more
than 200 observations for a day of year has filled in every date
with temperatures nearly the same.

The data I posted was from the official National Weather Service
Office in Seattle. Now, if you want to use the Weather Channel
as an accurate source of data, go ahead. First, tell us the
exact location of the measurements they present. I'd bet that
the NWS site is the Seattle airport. There are lots of other
sites around Seattle, which might explain the difference.

Of course, there's always the chance for human error.
Don't throw out all the other data just because you think there
might be a problem with one value. There were 192 records set
according to the NCDC site and many of the NWS reports are not
included in the NCDC data set.

I agree, but there seems to be enough mistakes to question
any out of the ordinary results.
I have seen Pasadena have 110 degree temperatures, and
the beach south of Los Angeles have temperatures in the 80s.

There were 192 records set
according to the NCDC site and many of the NWS reports are not
included in the NCDC data set.

No doubt with the stubborn high over Tenn.

But this is August, it has been hot after a cool July, and
day of year records are not all that uncommon with more and
more reporting stations, some not as old as others.

As far as I know, it the Ohio River valley has just had it's
6th warmest hot spell on record. Hopefully it will be a long time
before it breaks that record.
