Georgetown with 98.1 mm (average 10.5 mm, 136 years of record), Richmond with 164.3 mm (average 15.8 mm, 117 years of record), Chillagoe with 105 mm (average 18.4 mm, 106 years of record) and Townsville with 110 mm (average 21.1 mm, 67 years of record) all reported their wettest June on record. A series of cloud bands, which brought widespread rainfall, also kept daytime temperatures well below average with record low maximum temperatures reported across much of the state. Taking the state as whole, and based on figures since 1950, the average maximum temperature for the month was the lowest on record. A cold outbreak on the 20th and 21st of the month combined with the cloud cover to see new daily maximum temperatures for June recorded at a number of locations. These include Boulia with 9.0oC (average 23.3oC, 119 years of record), Richmond with 11.2oC (average 26.1oC, 114 years of record), Burketown with 13.4oC (average 28.0oC, 108 years of record), Mt Isa with 9.4oC (average 24.9oC, 41 years of record), and Townsville with 13.9oC (average 25.6oC, 67 years of record). While above average rainfall was recorded in Central and Southeast Queensland during June, longer-term rainfall deficiencies remain in these areas with well below average totals for the year to date. More details, including a full list of new record rainfall and temperature figures, are available in the Queensland Climate Summary for June at http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/curren....summary.shtml. For further information, please contact Ann Farrell on (07)3239 8660. After-hour enquiries should be directed to the senior forecaster on (07)32398750. Scientists say the bleaching has been caused by a combination of cold waters, winds and air temperatures hitting exposed reefs around the Capricorn-Bunker group of islands at the southern end of the reef. While other sections of the reef appear to have been spared by being fully submerged or far enough north to avoid the worst of the cold snaps in June and July, bleaching has been recorded by University of Queensland researchers on Heron Island, near Rockhampton. The area is regarded as having some of the most pristine sections of accessible reef. Coral expert Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, from the University of Queensland's Centre for Marine Studies, warned researchers along the reef to look for bleaching after Townsville experienced one of its coldest days on record, on June 20. Strong and sustained southerly winds that brought heavy rain to much of southeast Queensland in June and July exacerbated the chilly conditions for coral exposed at low tide and weakened the algae on the coral needed to keep it healthy. Professor Hoegh-Guldberg said the comfort zone for coral was between 19C and 27C but temperatures had fallen to 8C. While bleaching from extreme heat affects entire reefs, the cold bleaching appears to be isolated to the tips of wide areas of coral exposed to the chill. Professor Hoegh-Guldberg said the extreme variation in temperature might be more common as climate change caused hotter summers and colder winters. CSIRO oceanographer David Griffin said the only noticeably cold currents were further south, around Fraser Island, suggesting water was being cooled at the surface by the air temperature. The city along with the rest of the tri-state region is feeling the chilly effect of a cold front sweeping through the region, accompanied by cool rain showers. Tuesday's high temperature in Central Park was just 59 degrees. The normal high for Tuesday was 82 degrees. The normal low was 67. Forecasters were calling for temperatures to rise to about 66 for the high on Wednesday. Digg This Story! "This unusual blast of cold air smashed our previous record for the coldest high temperature on August 21, which is 64 degrees, set back in 1999," CBS 2 meteorologist Jason Cali told wcbstv.com. In fact, the 59-degree high tied the record for the coldest high temperature ever for the month of August in New York City, when it reached just 59 degrees in 1911. Tuesday's highs are more common in the city for the final days of October, when the average high ranges from 59 degrees to 61 degrees. The unusually cold air mass has come down from Canada, colliding with the moisture from the remnants of Tropical Storm Erin. "The good news is the cold air is not going to stick around. We'll get back to more seasonal levels later this week and we may even sneak a few more final hot weekends of the summer," Cali said. Temperatures are expected to climb back into the upper 80s by Friday. |

Temperatures dropped to record lows for August as snow fell in industrial hub Johannesburg for the first time in eight years in what residents say is an unusually severe winter. The city saw a high of 7 degrees Celsius (44 Fahrenheit) on Wednesday - the lowest daily high recorded in August - while overnight temperatures dropped well below freezing in some parts of the country. Colder temperatures are expected this weekend. "There is serious flooding, we are today flooding in most areas of Port Elizabeth," South African Weather Services forecaster Mandisi Manentsa-Titise told Reuters. The southern coast city, about 800 kilometers east of Cape Town, was the latest coastal area to suffer serious damage, as up to 270 millimeters of rain (nearly 11 inches) fell in the 24 hours to early Thursday. Police said four people drowned on Wednesday when their car washed away after a bridge collapsed near George, a small town 400 kilometers east of Cape Town, famous for its lush golf courses. Roads were flooded and thousands of people fled their homes in nearby tourist haven Knysna. Tifendell ski resort in the southern Drakensberg mountains recorded 20 centimeters of snow on Wednesday, and transport officials closed one of the main passes through the mountains near Lesotho due to thick snow. Weather Service spokesman Siyabonga Mthethwa said a deep low pressure was pumping moist air and gale-force winds onto the southern coast. But despite the devastation and record rainfall, the rains and icy weather were not particularly out of the ordinary for a southern hemisphere winter in South Africa, he said. "Although there have been some records broken it is a normal winter ... it is normal to get a low pressure system deepening quite fast and causing havoc along the coastal regions," Mthethwa added. |

Summer isn't usually the best time to be setting lots of cold records. 'specially under AGW. |
