uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged.

Scientists are saying, that new research is contradicting
global warming and saying that if the ice caps further
break off and or melt then the uk is at risk of getting
much colder!

Yep, saw that on the beeb. Interesting...again.

Buoy oh buoy, it just gets bitter and bitter...

The gulf between the opposing camps seems to be widening!

Well that's current affairs for you....

;-))

Sorry JCW didn't quite get your er erm ...drift.
Now all this talk about the Gulf Stream weakening - has Tiger Woods
developed a prostate problem?

Will the NAD slowly weaken over many years, or is there
historical evidence that it can shut down fast ?

From what I understand, it can shut down *very* fast.
Perhaps within a decade or so. And indeed can start
up again within a similar timescale.
These climate 'flips' from one steady state to another,
within a matter of a few years, are one of the most
important findings of the behaviour of our climate when it
had been hitherto assumed that such changes took place
gradually over hundreds or even thousands of years.

They is no gulf between the opposing camps because they are the same camp!
Global Warming refers to the overall warming of the the Globe. The UK is
not the whole Globe. The "new research" does not contradict Global Warming
as Nigel himself admits when he says "if the ice caps further break off or
melt then the UK is at risk of getting much colder." This theory requires
Global Warming to occur for the UK to cool down.

This "new research" is not a new theory but new measurements showing that
the part of the Gulf Stream transporting water Eastwards to Africa has
strengthened whilst the NAD, which moves warm water NE past the UK, has
weakened. This is what would be expected during a switch of the current
system in the North Atlantic. More than forty years ago, scientists were
aware that sudden changes in these currents had occurred in the past.

In the new circulation, the NAD would cease to exist. The Gulf Stream
would
be a closed anticyclonic circulation with its warm water probably
extending
no further north than 45N. To the north of this, there would be a cyclonic
circulation of cold water fed by the East Greenland and Labrador currents.
These cold currents would flow east across the Atlantic towards the UK
then
NE, taking the place of the NAD.

So if the NAD shutsdown it will cause the GONADS

to freeze. sounds nasty. )

All that effort building the channel tunnel goes to waste then - we'll
be able to drive ON the channel between November and March each year

Hey, didn't any of you watch The Day After Tomorrow? That movie PROVED
there's an ice age coming, due to global warming!
Seriously, based on the forecasts that you all* have been complaining
about, it seems the BBC has picked up on that idea....

*I live in North Carolina (USA), so "you all" is not only allowed, it's
a cultural requirement.

It's hardly news that if the Gulf Stream (or NAD if you prefer) stops (or
deviates South more like then the UK will get colder. I remember my
geography teacher pointing this out thirty years ago- his observation being
that the UK is the same latitude as Labrador & Newfoundland where winters
are far cooler. Cold currents off their coast don't help of course!

Don't know where you and your geography teacher were but mine was
saying the same forty years ago, whilst also remarking on the fact
that many of the coal deposits were formed from tree ferns, which
required much higher average temperatures than have been experienced
in the British Isles for quite some time.

That was more down to whole contenents moving about the face of the
earth, rather than ocean currents shifting.
