Default Problems with Freeagent

Frustration has set in here in Dorset! Firstly gave my back a fearful wrench
on Saturday, so, feeling very sorry for myself, come Sunday I brought up my
Freeagent icon and pinged for new messages. Winsock error or something.
Anyway, from that day till now I am getting the same error message and
wondering what the heck to do next. I have accessed the group through www.
ureader.co.uk which is not the usual layout. To my knowledge I have not
altered any settings: a friend thinks it is a problem at Wanadoo's end. Any
thoughts welcome!

wanadoo seem to have stopped supporting usenet
I recommend the advice I got John Hall here
For 10 Euros (about 7 quid) a year, news.individual.net is excellent.
However it doesn't provide binary groups, should you want any of those.
See: http://news.individual.net/

That server does not carry all the *alt hierarchy.

From discussions and queries on various newsgroups it looks as though
the mainly "free" ISPs are cutting down on what they offer as their
upstream providers are requiring payment.

It does look as though free access to a wide range of newsgroups is
disappearing, particularly binaries, and the smaller ISPs may be
squeezed out.

I've just checked Elaine, it might not have but it does now, if by alt you
mean groups like alt sustainable agriculture or alt talk weather snow

I had the same problem as I'm with Wanadoo (have been since the early
Freeserve days).

Like Jack. I suggest you use
http://groups.google.co.uk/group/uk.sci.weather/

It's fine, once you get used to the layout, and Googles going to stay
around for a bit!

It does - and AFAIAA it always has done.

It doesn't carry any binary groups, though.

Not a couple of the alt groups to which I'm subscribed, I think it's
possible that it carries only the more "serious" ones.

they don't carry the Clari net groups that I found useful, and I assumed it
was because so many of these are in HTML or binary (I only need the text
ones) so it might be a knock on effect from that policy
I'm going to try to contact them to see if they will take them, after all
they say they welcome this sort of suggestion

It doesn't carry binary groups, but based on my own experience it seems
to have a very good coverage of the others. It carries all the six alt
groups that I take, some of which are fairly obscure. Of course, it
probably doesn't carry any alt groups that have been created without
going through the proper process (yes, even the alt hierarchy has such a
thing).

From discussions and queries on various newsgroups it looks as though
the mainly "free" ISPs are cutting down on what they offer as their

Agreed.

The problem is at the Clari end. They don't make their groups available
to the Net at large, though posts crossposted to other groups may "leak"
out.
