Actually, I don't remember that one... about minus 4 by my calculations. Minus 4 months that is, my age at the time! ![]() Turning to more recent times, January and February 1963 (!) were also dry and settled in Western Scotland ![]() -- Dave |

I thought there have been some continental highs between then and now that have generated some dry ish conditions here in our location however hard it is to achieve - I thought that 1947 might have been rather an extreme year to choose Mind you to combat the wetness of the past year -- you may be right -- even in the last 5 days with a decent high we have only managed one 24 hour period which I would guess might have been a precipitation free zone but could not swear to it. The others, however beautiful in the main, have let us down along the way Sorry if I offended out of ignorance -- regards Jill Bowis Pure bred utility chickens and ducks Housing; Equipment, Books, Videos, Gifts Herbaceous; Herb and Alpine nursery Holidays in Scotland and Wales http://www.kintaline.co.uk |

Dave Ludlow wrote: small voice glad someone else asked /small voice :~)) Very high pressure in that part of Russia tends to be associated with very cold Winter conditions over there. If we get an Easterly, the very cold air will then be drawn towards the UK. The relative absence of high pressure implies an absence of very cold deep continental air and less than impressive Easterlies. For snow lovers, Philip's news *may be* good news. Or to put it another way: The high pressure presently pulling down cold polar air is situated to the west of us. However if the cold polar air is due to the high sitting to the east of us that is.. No, that's not right... If the Russians invade Poland... No that's wrong too... (We'd give them that just to spite the Germans...) Let me see.. Ermm.. Hang on... I think I had better read the rest of this thread. -- Posted via Mailgate.ORG Server - http://www.Mailgate.ORG |

(When I say "stick in the memory", I mean from reading about it. I'm not old enough to have been around when it happened.)
