Is there no way that the current rash of lunatic, racialist, misogynistic, and
plain evil posts be diverted or quarantined from this group ?.
I suspect that Damien is possibly deranged, and probably needs help, but in
the meantime every twisted troll that haunt these NGs gather around his
posts like bees around a honeypot, and most of their stuff is either
obscene,vitriolic,or just plain barmy.
So,please, can anything be done to protect us from this very unpleasant
malaise ?

Unlike forums, absolutely anyone may post to Usenet, so the answer is a
"no".

The only way forward is to totally ignore such posts. Most news readers
give you the ability to both "kill file" particular posters and threads.
With my reader I have just done that, so further posts on a particular
topic and by certain posters, in any thread, just won't show in my list of
new posts.

I see you are using OE - you highlight a particular message, then go up to
"Message" on the top bar and go down to "Create rule from message"

Unfortunately I think not Ron. I suspect that all the trolls are one
person. Maybe two or three at the most. Probably a gang of schoolboys
pratting about.

Best thing is to ignore, and they'll go and take the pee out of somebody
else.

The simple way is to use your killfile and Killthread facilities. The
only time that I see any of these posts is when a person, who is not in
my killfile, replies to one of these posts and leaves the offensive
matter in. Unless the thread has been killed, of course. If nobody
responds to their posts they tend to go and play elsewhere.

It seems unlikely, unless the posters go so far as to contravene their
ISP's Acceptable Use Policy. Traditionally, abuse on the Net, as opposed
to abuse of the Net, has been allowed, rightly or wrongly.

The best solution is probably self-help. I believe even Outlook Express
(which I see from your headers that you're using) allows you to killfile
posters so that you won't see their posts.

You could do it that way, or you could select the next option on that menu,
"Block Sender".

Come on Rob, you know how to do it properly. What's changed?

From what I can view of this group there's no Proper Trolling in this group.
It's just people with a difference of opinion and from my vast knowledge of
ISPs. They do not take any abuse report serious unless it is abusive. There
is none in this group. They will just laugh at you if you report someone for
not agreeing with you or simply you just don't like them.

I agree with the others, you can't stop 'em but the one (using
aliases) or very few people involved are easy to spot and ignore. I
don't even bother to killfile them any more, I just let 'em get on
with talking to themselves.

If you're using Windows, you can install nfilter from here -
http://www.nfilter.org/
FAQ - http://www.nfilter.org/faq.html
It works with Agent, OE etc.
"Nfilter is capable of filtering on any fields that appear in the header
of a news article, not just fields in the overview (normally news clients
can only filter on author, subject, etc). For example, it can filter on
path (eg. all posts from news.foo.net), newsgroups (eg. all posts
cross-posted to alt.foo), nntp-posting-host, etc, etc."

If anyone's using linux, you can use Leafnode from here -
http://leafnode.sourceforge.net/
Leafnode can killfile on *any* header, so no matter if the troll morphs,
you can kill on a header he has no control over.

HTH.
