The FAQ (and associated Glossary)

I have today uploaded the latest update to the FAQ & Glossary, and this
message is to announce that this will the last time I shall do so.

I can no longer maintain the FAQ to the standard I would wish for
reasons that I don't want to enlarge upon here. I will keep the various
pages hosted on my site for as long as I maintain the ntl account, but
will not perform any more updates, amendments etc.

In the life-time of this newsgroup (and near 10-year history of the
FAQ), the world of the Internet has changed out of all recognition. In
1996, UK-based web sites that held information, advice etc., on matters
of interest to the 'amateur' weather community were few and far between.

Now, we have many and varied sites with useful advice, and of course
Wikipedia is also available and popular. Also the advent of powerful
search engines has revolutionised the WWW, which applications both find
data very efficiently, and some (e.g. Google) store web pages for
all-time (or at least as long as we can foresee).

If anyone should wish to take over this job, then of course please do so
with my blessing: you can either lift the relevant pages from my site,
or I can burn a CD with the files for manipulation.

Thank you for all your help and support over the past years.

Martin.

I am sorry to lose your input there and grateful for the feature. I
hope whatever the reason is, that everything will improve. I hope for
the best for you and yours.

Snipped a bit.

There are certain people on this newsgroup whose contributions are immense.
I won't name them now, if only for fear of missing someone out
inadvertently, but you know who you are and more importantly, so do we and
we reaaly value your efforts.

Martin, I appreciate your comments and thank-you for the 10 years (so
far!!!) of the FAQ. I really hope someone can take it on, as it has been
invaluable for many and has always been the first point of reference when a
question has been raised and is quite unique in the information available.
I am proud to actually have my name mentioned in it, no matter that it's for
something quite trivial, so I have a vested interest in its continuation,
though unfortunately not the time or dedication that others have
demonstrated to this ng.

That's sad news.

Thank you for all your help and support over the past years.

The thanks should be all yours, for all the time, skill and effort that
you have put into the FAQ.

I am sorry to hear that Martin. I've found it a very useful reference.

Martin

I'm sure I speak on behalf of everyone involved with the ng when I sincerely
thank you for making such a valuable resource available. Pity the TV
recognition took so long!

Wishing you every health and happiness in 2007 and beyond.

.... very roughly 8 Mb. I say 'very roughly' because the way it's been
built up over the years means that there are a lot of files
inter-locking with my own personal web data, and that's something I
would need to disentangle if someone were to host / maintain the site
independently.

I have virtually unlimited web space and bandwidth, and would be happy
to take over hosting and maintaining the FAQ. I'd want to put my own
'look and feel' on it, without losing accessibility - not that there's
anything wrong with the current design - but I'd be relying on the
experts in the newsgroup as far as the content is concerned.

Of course, if Gareth is about to volunteer, I'm happy for him to do it.

I was considering volunteering, but I've so much on at the moment that
I'd be glad to let you have a bash :-)
