Certainly rare since 1970. Only 3 years have had an annual maximum
less than 30C

1993: 29.7C at East Bergholt
1981: 29.5C at Kew.
1978: 28.8C at Poolewe

The lowest annual maximum 1900-2006 was recorded at the old MetO
station here in Raunds in 1920 with 27.8C

What about 1980? Also how about 1985 - I thought that was the year
when the maximum temperature (of just below 30C) was in October.

I recorded 30.1C on the 5th August in Canterbury (but not official!).
Only six days so far this year have exceeded 25C - it would be
interesting to see what the lowest number of days to exceed 25C in past
years is.

The total of 25+ days here so far as 4, one of them in
April. This is the same figure as for 1985 and 1988 and I am rather
doubtful if it will now be exceeded. Highest temperature this year is
27.6°C (5 Aug) but this is not my lowest, which was 27.5°C in 1988.
(Records start 1983).

Hi Nick,

Thanks for pointing out 1980, the annual max was 29.4 at Cors Fachno
(Dyfed) however 1985 did exceed 30C. 30.1 at St Louis (Jersy). The
hot spell in early October you refer to, which I recall well, saw
March (Cambs) record an all time October high of 29.4 on the 4th.

Cheers,

Ian.

Oh, I know. Hence the exclamation marks.

I've see 28C at Altnahara at around 11am (passed the weather station just as
the observer was taking readings)..

Has anywhere in the UK recorded a 30C max on any day this year yet? If
not, how unusual is this?

I thought the London Weather Centre did on the 5th August. 30.2c if I
remember correctly

Has anywhere *with anywhere near standard exposure* recorded 30°C yet
this year? (If we count LWC, perhaps I can include the 48°C it reached
on a couple of days over summer in my conservatory, the exposure is
quite similar?)

I think excluding LWC the highest credible synop site max to date is
29.7°C at both Coningsby and Holbeach on 5 August. If this remains the
highest of the year - and there's 2-3 weeks yet which could surpass
this - it will be the lowest UK annual maximum since 1981 (29.5°C at
Kew Gardens on 5 August) although 1993 equalled 29.7°C (East Bergholt,
Suffolk, on 4 July). Of course, some of the monthly-reporting Met O
climat sites may have also just surpassed 30°C, and there may be other
standard sites in other networks such as the COL A-grade locations.

But do you have a Parabolic mirror and fresh black tarmac laid daily?

We might be in for a long wait, how long did it take the MetO to
conjour up 38.5C at 'Brogdale' on Aug 10th 2003. I'm sure they didn't
go public with that until the October.

Ian.

The only time I passed Altnaharra, in mid-July, it was 11C! (I checked
when I got home!)
