Britain braced for Siberian blast
© ITN 2007 Britain is braced for sub-zero temperatures next week with weathermen warning of ice, sleet and freezing winds. Chaos is predicted on the roads as the cold snap is expected to arrive as millions returns to work after the Christmas and New Year holidays. Piers Corbyn, from long-range forecasters WeatherAction, said: "The winds from Siberia are going to make it extremely cold - like the conditions we experienced in January 1987 where it was -12C (10.4F) in the south. "The average temperature for January as a whole will be close to freezing - 0.8C (33.4F) at best." He added that temperatures could plummet to -17C (1.4F) in the Midlands. The Highways Agency seem in agreement and has put hundreds of gritting vehicles on standby across the country. But other forecasters have made more conservative predictions. The Met Office said we could expect a fairly mild January after a cold snap later this week. And Stephen Davenport, senior meteorologist at MeteoGroup, said: "Apocalyptic predictions verging on prophecies of a new Ice Age need to be put into perspective. "There is no doubt at all that it will feel bitterly cold, especially on Thursday and particularly in the eastern half of Britain. "Strong, raw winds from the east will bring a significant wind-chill and showers of sleet and snow. In the middle of winter such conditions are hardly unknown though, and in fact could be far, far worse. Indeed, some people in the western half of the country might be left wondering what all the fuss is about. "By the weekend this brief freeze will have disappeared, as milder and occasionally wet and windy weather blasts in from the west. "That will put winter on hold again for most areas until at least the middle of next week, although snow is possible for a time in the North on Sunday and Monday." |

Until now I was blissfully ignorant of exactly who Piers Corbyn is. After a
few minutes googling I unfortunately have found out and wish now I had not wasted my time. He seems an irritant to some people, and a person who does not realise that he is creating his own ridicule. I love this quote from his website: "There is no evidence that CO2, whether natural or from man, drives world temperature. The Sun not CO2 drives Climate, and the current claims by the IPCC - which is a body of appointees of Governments not independent scientists - are based on failed science. I urge everyone to look at the facts - Channel 4 Thurs 8th March 9pm 'The Great Global Warming Swindle', Piers said. Enough said. |

Suburbia is the London Boroughs of Bexley, Bromley, Greenwich, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark and the University of Greenwich. Ah, I see where he's getting confused with his forcasts now ;-) -- Keith (Southend) http://www.southendweather.net e-mail: kreh at southendweather dot net |

Oddly enough Piers brother Jeremy is a member of this present government http://www.jeremycorbyn.co.uk/ This from wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Corbyn "He is one of the signatories to Tony Banks' "Pigeon Bombs" Early Day Motion and Michael Meacher's Climate Change EDM, in stark opposition to his brother, weather forecaster Piers Corbyn's view on climate change." |

Well, we're either going to get blasted with Hurricanes, or Blizzards
In the world of Pier's mind, an 'end of the world' type weather event is always just around the corner. Well, he made me laugh anyway. Never ceases to amaze me, how far people will go, to get their articles published, and get at least one rung up on that 'fame' ladder |

Enough said. He gives us so much ammunition. His failed forecasts are legion and his statements and methods nonsensical yet he still makes piles of dosh. But so does Uri Geller. Tudor Hughes |
