Hi.
At 2000 the temp here fell 6C from 10 to 4 in about as many minutes. It was accompanied by heavy rain and some very strong gusts, but when I later checked the max gust speed I was very surprised to see 75 mph (65 kts) recorded by my Davis VP! I know this is a very exposed location but even so... I am fairly certain it is untrue because the last highest gust of 62 mph back in Oct 2002 blew out 7 panes of glass from my greenhouse and this one didn't take any! Any explanations anyone? -- Chris |

Replaced with new glass that hasn't got the micro scratches on the surface from which cracks can grow? Seriously though was your 75mph gust one out on its own or the down with all the other gusts? Take a look at my windspeed graph for yesterday: http://www.howhill.com/weather/prev-day.php (there until midnight ish) I tend to ignore the ones that out on their own like 0145, 0240, 1930, 2245 etc. -- Cheers Dave. pam is missing e-mail |

Any explanations anyone? Is your VP wireless or cabled? I've seen numerous previous reports of wireless VPs logging very high gusts in heavy rain and, possibly, a bit of hail; I suspect it's a signal propagation fault. (One occasion I saw a report, by a very excited observer, of a gust of something like 160 mph - ermm, let me explain what 160 mph would actually do to hour house, never mind your anemometer ...) If you're in doubt, there's little or no significant damage (even if very local) and it doesn't fit the local gust field, I'd doubt the reading. HTH. Stephen Burt Stratfield Mortimer, Berkshire |
