Ï "Yannis" Ýãñáøå óôï ... Hi all. It was the first subject on the Dutch RTL-4 weather forecast just a quarter of an hour ago. The explanation was that it was extremely cold in the stratosphere, -80C at some height. With so low temperatures, there can be condensation even there; the combination of these thin clouds' height and the sun's light gives out this weird, yet beautiful colour. The presenter actually started explaining that the stratosphere is getting colder as part of global warming and that this /could/ be a more frequent phenomenon in the future (actually she took it even further, explaining that this de facto increase of instability could cause "more weather" in a warmer climate on average). I hope it helps. And here's the video link for anyone interested:http://tinyurl.com/2veph2 (press "Het weer 19:50 uur - Helga van Leur" under "Laatste videos" from the menu on the right if it doesn't load directly). Yannis. Thanks for that, Yannis, and for the translation, because it was all Greek to me, as we say. (er, sorry about that). Dutch, it seems, is ten times more gghhhhuttural than Welsh, even. At least it confirms that the cloud, or whatever it is, is very high. I think saying that this will lead to more "weather" i.e. convective storms, is rather gilding the lily and is highly unlikely. Can you imagine an explanation like that on the BBC, let alone anyone else, with their moronic graphics and overall infantile approach. The bird was all right, 'n' all. But she was only a small part of the reason I found this presentation something of an eye- opener after the dross we suffer. Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, Surrey. |

I believe there was a fairly detailed description and explanation on R5L's "Up All Night" last night. Philip |

Just as a followup, gliding on sunday at Darlton (N Notts) and everyone
commented on how pronounced the inversion was (in terms of the atmospheric conditions - can't comment on the actual temps) so I don't know if that was a factor in the sunset that followed ucsdcpc wrote: here's some photos my son took - sunset today (18th), yesterday and a couple on the 10th http://www.flickr.com/photos/gadders/tags/sunset/ all in Nottingham or just north Chris Trevor wrote: wrote in message ... According to weatherman on local TV it's due to ice crystals high in the atmosphere diffusing the light? Jeff |
