Collins English Dictionary: To use battens in nailing a tarpaulin over a
hatch on a ship to make it secure.

Do you have many ships up your way?

Actually I hope it will be OK as it is exposed to the south?

I have disconnected my wind turbine as it threatens to go into orbit
in winds over 50 knots. You should probably put some extra shores up
round your boat if she is not in a cradle, I have known them drop out
in severe winds as the mast shakes around and loosens up the wedges.

Too late! It wasn't the little Mirror I saw drifting lonely past Budleigh
this morning after last night's stormy weather? On its way east to Dorset,
it'll be with you shortly Hugh.........

Sunny ol' morn.

Thanks Mike, I don't have any wind equipment on the mast so that should be
OK. She is a bilge keel and sits on the bilges raised up on old railway
sleepers (1960s Snapdragon 23). I guess she should be OK in that regard.

Yes Will, part of my past life was battening down hatches, particularly when
encountering typhoons during the 50s & 60s in the Far East, cyclones in the
Indian Ocean and N.Atlantic storms.
Wooden hatch covers were covered with layers of tarpaulin and secured round
the sides with bars and wedges. When adverse weather was forecast,
additional securing involved fitting locking battens over the top of the
tarpaulins from each side and locked together at the middle join.
Not foolproof, but this was the method until Mr.McGregor came along with his
metal covers.

Not quite 'the calm before the storm' because it's actually quite
breezy, but after clearance of the overnight rain it's sparkling
clear blue skies and excellent visibility here. Temp 4.9C.
No sign (yet) on the western horizon of the encroaching cloud sheet.....

It just about counts as the 'calm before the storm' here methinks. Lovely
and sunny, and feeling warm in the sunshine with only a light breeze from
the SW.

Thin and patchy high cloud moving in from the west is the only visual sign
of things to come. The pressure has now started to fall after briefly rising
to 1010.2 hPa at 10:00 am.

(11:18), 9.6°C, RH 76%, DP 5.2°C, 1009.8 hPa (F), Wind 6 mph SSW.
