"For the UK and western Europe spring this year is likely to be cooler
than last year, with mean temperatures either near or below average."

Today's Telegraph managed to turn this into a front page piece that was
so exaggerated that even the Express might have thought twice about
running it. I've just searched for it on their website, but couldn't
find it. Maybe they saw sense and pulled it.

It's suggesting temperatures will definitely be well below average,
while the forecast says average or below, so quite a blatant
fabrication of the truth.

Seriously though, I do hope the long-running (12 months now) tendency
for temperatures below the average for the past 20 years does come to
an end sooner rather than later, I'm sure few would want another
summer like the last two. Let's hope all the cold in spring is
concentrated in March and early April, when it can still be
"interesting"...

Actually, having just read the online article it wasn't too bad with a nice
picture, but then I guess the Torygraph is a quality newspaper unlike the
Sexpress.

Jon.

I have to say that I think that this is an excellent call by our Met Office.
Not all doom and gloom either, plenty of dry weather on offer which means
plenty of sun no doubt to warm the soil which means that growers will be
able to get out and sow crops etc. Colder weather will provide interest with
possibly some fantastic cumulonimbus displays, thunder etc to keep us on our
toes. This has cheered me up as the last thing I wanted to see was warm and
wet! Bring on the sunshine.

.... before everyone runs away with the fact that this forecast is
'gospel', remember this?

There's still some way to go with seasonal forecasting.
