Some way O/T, but humour me
Just got back from the far north mainland watching the surfing http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/s...ds/6606813.stm Also managed to get to Shetland for a few days, and noticed a roadside marker sign indicating you were at 60 deg north. Set me wondering if there were similar signs elsewhere in the UK? I see that the Lizard is just below 50 north, and I'm sure there'll be lots in East Anglia marking the meridian. Or is Shetland unique? Jim |

Jim It west Cornwall & Scilly, it's become fashionable to wear clothing showing the lat/long it was bought. We were on passage between locations off West Africa and the Master contived to have our noon position as 00 deg 00 min 00 sec N/S, 000 deg 00 min 00sec E/W. Jim I have lived in Cornwall, off and on, since 1978 and have driven down to the Lizard on many occasions but I've never seen any signs indicating the 50th parallel. -- MCC OT, but you did ask ... there's a nice cafe bar in Falmouth harbour, just outside the National Maritime Museum, which is called 5°W. It's a little bit off, as Google Earth shows it at 50° 09'N, 5° 03'W, but what's 3 minutes between friends?! I also recall seeing a fabulous clifftop villa with a superb view in Grenada, WI, which was called 12°N - and it lay exactly on the line. It was truly the stuff of dreams, especially to the penniless student I was when I saw it ... wonder whether it's still there? -- Stephen Burt Stratfield Mortimer, Berkshire |
