![]() looks the like the deep cold is not going to make it ![]() UK Outlook for Tuesday 5 Jan 2010 to Thursday 14 Jan 2010: The middle part of next week and the following weekend will be cold in all parts. There will be some hard overnight frosts, with a risk of patchy freezing fog. Southern and western parts should be mainly dry and sunny, although there is the risk of some occasional wintry showers. However, wintry showers will be heavier and more frequent in the north and east where some significant falls are possible. There is also a low risk of a spell of wintry weather in the south for a time at the end of next week. The further outlook will continue much the same although it may become a little less cold. Some more persistent rain, sleet or snow might spread into the west or southwest later. Updated: 1139 on Thu 31 Dec 2009 |

The "deep cold" (~ -10C at 850mb) arrives in the next 72 hours, and looks pretty likely to persist for about a week: http://www.wzkarten.de/pics/MT8_London_ens.png The end of the forecast says it "may become a little less cold" - in about a fortnight! What sort of "deep cold" were you expecting? |

![]() Looks to me that the boys in exeter are not going with the boys in reading (ecmwf) any more. Its like the ukmo have backed off following the deep cold shown by the ecmwf for the last few days. One person actually said they were the coldest charts he'd ever seen, to be fair he did put them in his freezer. However many experts plumbed for the coldest spell seen in many a year, I was so convinced that when the Aston Villa game was on the other night I thought the snow was going to settle and then drift South back to me. Nope overall a load of tosh and slosh really and once again a massive damp squib . I'd rather not have got me hopes up in the first place than go through all this again. |

Totally agree,
The forums are in meltdown. Best charts ever? Yes. Will they ever come about? no. Im just waiting for the mass wrist slashing which I always find amusing. Look like the ukmo have picked up on something on the 15 dayer....you can hear the knives coming out. We all new there was going to be a less cold interlude between Christmas and New Year. However in 48 hours' time the upper air will be at least 5 degrees colder than it is now, and will stay at least that cold for the best part of a week. I'm not sure I would agree that the UKMO charts are backing off cold conditions... http://www.wzkarten.de/pics/Rukm1441.gif That still shows thicknesses well below 520dam across the vast majority of the UK. |

With an average December temperature of +0.0ºC in this part of central lowlands, frost every day for three weeks and total snow cover largely greater than 6 inches for over 2 weeks and minor roads with several inches of ice this has already been an unquestionably and definitive VERY cold period, nevermind snap or spell for at least a part of the UK. The squib was loud indeed, we'll need to wait though in order to see if it was Dynamite or Nuclear. Perhaps the shockwaves have yet to reach the Watford gap! Alex. |

Terry Tibbs writes: looks the like the deep cold is not going to make it ![]() That's not my interpretation at all - see below. However, wintry showers will be heavier and more frequent in the north and east where some significant falls are possible. Whoever put that together seems to have an aversion to the word "snow". I don't think many, if any. of those showers will be of rain or sleet. There is also a low risk of a spell of wintry weather in the south for a time at the end of next week. By "wintry weather" I assume that they mean snow. The further outlook will continue much the same although it may become a little less cold. All they are saying is that it may become a little less cold from about Saturday 9th. Some more persistent rain, sleet or snow might spread into the west or southwest later. Which obviously implies that it will still be pretty cold.
