I believe he got fed up with certain people breaking the guidelines for the
group by bringing politics into discussions. I wish he'd return.

Does AGW count as politics, BTW?

When Oz had its cold snap last winter I emailed Phillip asking him to
recycle a memorable piece he wrote for the Sunday Telegraph 20 years
or so ago about Sydney's coldest ever day (1859, I think. The max.
temp. was 4C! ). He replied straightaway saying, rather sheepishly,
that he hadn't kept it. He must get scores of emails a day, and it's
the mark of a true gent. to reply to all of them. Patrick Moore is
just the same. It's easy to understand why he doesn't want to get into
online arguments with rabble-rousers, but I really miss his
contributions.

I do miss his weather reports from Whipsnade which is quite close to my
home as it is an interesting comparison. I can visit his website of course
to find out what is going on there.

Echoed.

I think that it all depends on how it's discussed. It needs to be
discussed scientifically, rather than politically or as a religious
doctrine.

No. GW discussions are allowed as long as they don't stray from the science.

Some have suggested that, to its supporters, AGW is more like a
religion...

I don't see why you're picking out the AGW supporters. I find little
difference in argument between the doom-mongers and the ostriches.

I prefer the term 'agnostic' to 'ostrich', myself.

Gosh, well that takes me back! I remember sometimes in those early days
the newsgroup would be considered busy if there were 13 posts a week!!

Ironic, isn't it, that this thread that started with someone asking
why he left should turn into the reason for it.
