Gravesend and Mildenhall both 28.6c Touch and go whether 30.0 will be reached to break the October record again. Jim. |

It's a disappointingly cool 20C in my North-facing back garden in Portsmouth at 14:50. It got quite cold last night, and hasn't had any sun to warm it up today. Looking at the 'Wundermap' (http://www.wunderground.com/wunderma...-1.981&zoom=13) there are several nearby stations reporting 21/22C but others in the same area reporting 29, 30, even 32C. They're probably not wrong as such, but clearly local conditions are making a huge difference to temperatures. My garden got cold overnight and hasn't had any sun to warm it up, whereas someone else's garden will have had 6 or 7 hours of sunshine to warm it up, so even readings taken in the shade are going to be wildly different. Makes it a bit pointless to quibble over tenths of a degree, or even several degrees, when the temperature experienced by different people in the same area can be so different. |

If there are differences of 8-10° they are almost certainly wrong even by fairly lax standards of recording, probably due to faulty exposure or even, with the amount of difference reported, people telling porkies - it has happened. *My garden got cold overnight and hasn't had any sun to warm it up, whereas someone else's garden will have had 6 or 7 hours of sunshine to warm it up, so even readings taken in the shade are going to be wildly different. Could be true in a vacuum. *Makes it a bit pointless to quibble over tenths of a degree, or even several degrees, when the temperature experienced by different people in the same area can be so different. Quite so. In fact why bother with all this instrumentation at all. Just say it's hot. Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, Surrey. |

In my well exposed Stevenson screen but out in the beating sun my max todat
hit 29.2c (the warmest so far) whilst my neighbour with a similar aws but sheltered under a large tree only reached 27,9c, Who's right ? RonB "Togless" wrote in message ...
