Default [WR]Dublin - Rain, a tad wet!

Taken from RTE newsfeed circa 20:10 this evening:

Over the past 24 hours 87mm has fallen, bringing the total so far this month
to 157mm - more than double the monthly average and four times more than
fell in the entire month of October last year.

Over one month's worth of rain has fallen in the past 24 hours at Casement
Aerodrome according to the Met Office. 90mm today alone according to Irish
Met Office.

It's been bad in Dublin with emergency services called into play in the
city. Cars abandoned in places. Major shopping centre, Dundrum, closed early
and then flooded on basement floor. Other buildings badly flooded and some
reckoned to be closed to businesses tomorrow. Rail and bus services
disrupted. Clearing away slowly and glad to say it's stopped raining
here...at last.

Dublin City Manager John Tierney has declared the situation a major
emergency.

Flooded roads and poor visibility have caused traffic problems for both
motorists and commuters.
Dublin Fire Brigade has half of its fleet of fire appliances out dealing
with flooding in Dublin city.

A spokesman said they are expecting an unusually high tide around 10pm,
which may add to difficulties.

There are reports that the Dodder and Camac rivers are overflowing.

Some day.....

A month's worth of rain in a day always seems to be a pretty handy
indicator of a serious rainfall situation.

I've not had one drop of rain from this 'event' which started early on
Sunday,
and I don't expect to either as the current rain band decays only for
another
to form over eastern England early tomorrow.

There won't be many places in the country that will be able to say that
in 36 hours time.

Indeed, Col, and sheer madness here earlier.

Wife on phone to her work most of evening organising facility services for
buildings flooded. BCM invocations being considered to alternate sites which
says a lot for the seriousness of it all.

Storm drains overflowed; manhole covers lifted (some interesting footage now
appearing on Youtube); cars flooded and one clip shows a BMW 5-series
floating slowly away with hazards flashing! No news to report, thankfully,
of any injuries...but won't know full extent until tomorrow. I imagine many
householders and shop owners are going to suffer quite tonight.

THe difference now from earlier is remarkable. Drying out and cooling down.

Hideous wasn't it Joe - was over visiting the Dublin office and I had
to take refuge in O'Donoghue's with several pints of Guinness...

Can safely say I've never seen a day like that in the UK !

Well, that was a very strategic move, Richard! I could think of a lot worse
places to be - you did well to get out of those conditions.
You picked one heck of a time to return for the visit...!!!

Sad to see the event wasn't without cost of life though and to see a young
woman drown in her basement flat in the middle of Dublin beggars belief.
Also an off-duty policeman was swept away as he tried to divert people away
from a dangerous bridge.
