Watching a pristine layer of snow, slowly melt away before the cold air
returns. All very sad.
Some of you in the SE have my commiserations :-)

12cm of snow followed by 36 hours of temperatures between 0.5c and
3.5c, it's become very dirty, drippy anw wet! I am still happy that
the drifts and the ditches full of snow will remian for some
considerable time to come at these temperatures. Would be nice to see
a frost again though, and maybe lose the fog for a few minutes.

Not a even a faint hint of any snow here at Shoreham by Sea and long may it
continue although the Grandkids were hoping to build a snow man so an
excursion onto the South Downs was in order. ;-)

I fear i might find some when i drive to Germany on Thursday though !

When will that be then? A walk round the Nature Reserve this morning
and there was six inches of cover and snow on the branches. Went
sledging this evening with my daughter and the boys. Perfect conditions
in the mountainous region of S.Essex at a heady 80 metres ;-). Gonna
take a while to shift I think.

Around 4-6 inches of snow on Holmbury Hill, Surrey, only a slight thaw
today. Roads were glistening as I cycled home suggesting the ground is
starting to re-freeze. More of a thaw at low levels, in Horsham the snow
depth is down to about an inch.

A group of us may go swimming in the outdoor pool at work tomorrow
lunchtime. The water temperature as measured today was 2C.

It's amazing how quick snow can melt away, by the end of yesterday there
was about an inch of snow left of the 5 inches that fell on Saturday
evening. Yesterday, on the pavements was very slushy, my shoes and feet
were soaking wet.

This morning was foggy, later on it cleared to give an overcast sky.
The only snow left is in clumps from people's drives and north facing
gardens.

Surely watching it melt away knowing that zonality was
coming would be even sadder?
At least this is only a temporary incursion of mild air for
you, and really just a partial thaw for me.
I fully expect there still to be full snow cover here
(albeit very depleted) by the end of the week.

Hi Dave, great stuff! Never too old to sledge, what fun it is, especially
with grandchildren, I'm not jealous of your snow (always get snow somewhere
on Dartmoor every winter guaranteed), but I am of you being a grandad, I'd
so love that, are you listening daughter, get on with it!!! :-)

You're right it will take some shifting with the wet-bulb falling below zero
on Wednesday and clearing skies, allowing a crust to form. Nice one!

Cheers,
Will

I'd love to share your sadness, Will, but any chance of me watching my
garden's pristine layer of snow melt away disappeared at 6am on Sunday
morning when my two excited daughters ran out there to build a
snowman!
For the purposes of weather observations I'm using the vacant
neighbouring house's garden. At 9am this morning still a full cover
though now down to a sugary 5cm. Yesterday it was 9.5cm, the day
before 15cm! With the return of the continental air the remaining
slush has frozen and I now expect it to last till the end of the week
