Lots of thunder but little rain (0.5mm) from that one. The recent heavy
downpours have been very localised indeed.

Heavy downpours all day here in North Kent. The weather here this Summer reminds me more of Summers in my native Glasgow. If the weather doesn't improve soon the this tune could be the soundtrack to Summer 2012:

Gerard,
Rochester,
Kent.

Released March 1966 and I remember it. Perhaps we could get rid of
weather presenters and put on the appropriate music video to get the
message across. Some cracking downpours later on in the summer of 1966
in Enfield as I drove my little electric bread van around (student job)
discovering that the single windscreen wiper stopped working as the
battery got tired. I even recall the weather on World Cup Final day
1966. Warm with heavy showers in the morning, drier in the afternoon.

George, just out of interest, how much rain did you record on Wednesday
evening around 6pm in that huge thunderstorm - I was at my daughter;s
house, not far from you, by the park in Woodford Green - the rain was
torrential!

Steve J

As a Woodford Green resident Steve, that storm lasted about 20 minutes
6-25/6-45 BST but only gave 4mm of rain,it did seem a lot more tho....

RonB

PS Where's the park in Woodford Green ?

Well you had to make some dough somehow George ;-)
I didn't like that record because my girlfriend fancied Scott Walker, or
was it the other one, anyway .... happy days, great year to be 16.

Yes Dave, one of of the upper crust and I had to use my loaf. Still
recall the names of some of the types of bread I sold 46 years ago. Long
Toms , Split Tins and Cobs. An interest in weather was quite useful as
few products were wrapped and the freshly baked bread was often left at
doorsteps in a shopping bag and I also had to keep everything dry as I
walked around carrying an enormous basket. I could also earn a bonus
from selling non bread food produce and tried to anticipate demand for
particular items based on the weather forecast. Mind you all this was
quite a contrast to my first job that summer-as a dustman. That was a
real challenge in the rain.

My daily total ended up 27.4mm (18z - 18z), month total now 105.2mm
(243%), my July record now smashed.

Looks like another band of showers still to come through about 10 to
11ish this evening.

First band of showers went through here around 10pm. Looked worse on the
radar than it turned out to be on the ground- another 3mm rain.
