I am a long time lurker in this group and have enjoyed many a relevant
discussion about our weather ... the reason I joined the group. I am
sick and tired though of back-biting and all the rest. Would some kind
person like to point me towards (possibly a moderated forum) a discussion
group/web/whatever reminiscent of this group about 3 years or so ago?

Tired regards,

Ian

The moderators can be rather strict as regards what is allowed but there
is nothing approaching the fighting there has been here recently.
Any potential problems are nipped in the bud long before they get
out of hand!

While a member of the TWO forum I give my vote to:

http://www.ukweatherworld.co.uk/forum/index.php

(Not so "hectic" as other forums which makes it more accessible, civil and
the contributors are very knowledgeable, IMHO! Will Hand joined not too
long ago and posts on occasion.)

This group is just fine as long as you kill-file the few idiots we have
in this village. Although things may get a little fractious from time
to time, that has always been the case; I've been dumping the odd
person in my kill-file for almost as long as this group has existed.

As to forums, I can't stand the things. Why anyone would want to use
anything so slow and cumbersome baffles me. I can use one access method
to check all my mail, RSS feeds and a few dozen newsgroups. Why switch
from a simple system where I can see on a single screen whether anything
new has arrived? I've tried a few forums but most of them are a right
pain to navigate through and each one has its own annoyingly different
set of peculiarities.

Anyway, I use a moderated newsgroup; it's this one and I moderate it
myself for me alone. That way, if I blank someone, I don't annoy
someone else who may find that person's contributions amusing.

My sentiments exactly, Graham. I don't know what all the fuss is about. I don't
see any of the trash. This place is fine for me.

Graham, you may be a little harsh on forums, well some of them!?

There's an interesting weather set-up that may develop this weekend (Sunday
into Monday). It could be a significant Autumn storm or maybe just a gusty
afternoon... Whichever it is, a forum such as UKWW provides good focussed
discussion on it without the risk of hijacking or other distraction. You
get reasoned and/or scientific analysis on a situation in a specific thread
if that's what interests you. Social banter is catered for in other threads
if that's more to your taste.

If you can follow this link, irrespective of the view of forums, this thread
posted below is a fine example of good analysis and discussion on a possible
weather event and with opportunity to learn for those, like me, who have
much to learn!!! ;-)

Come on Graham be brave who are the idiots you like to kill file and why are they idiots.

I thought the main bone of contention here was the way Garvey with his chirpy politeness has won so many friends over the years.

Come on Joe

The weather outlook? You are always at the mercy of a moderator taking a dislike to someone for personal reasons not rules and they are very much open to interpretation. Its like walking on eggshells over there.

I like Marcus he manages to say his bit and I enjoy going there for the enthusiasm during severe periods but that's it as you might upset the great MattyH

Yes, Lawrence, but it's the UKWeatherWorld forum (UKWW link above) that I
was "promoting"! TWO I visit to pick up info on other data sources or read
contributions from those who I respect for their knowledge and willingness
to share it. There's a few on Netweather too!! However, UKWW remains my
personal favourite.

Yes, MattyH has his own way of doing things, as well as having his own
way..!!!

Moderating any forum can't be easy but I do think the guys on UKWW do a very
good job of being impartial and fair when needs be...and the "needs be"
doesn't happen too often!!!

Well you can always invent another character, do it badly enough and they will think you are ******* and ban him instead.

Keep a blog and rant all you like on that.
Personal spites should go to e-mail if you can't hold your self in or hold others in more respect.
You should take a leaf out of my book, it's falling apart.
