Definate glow to the northern horizon between the little bits of
cloud. First aurora for years, there may have been other chances in the last year but cloud is PITA... Alerts from spaceweather.com and Lancs Uni Aurorawatch. Kp about 6, which it has to be to produce a visible aurora here and forecast to rise: http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/wingkp/24_hour.html -- Cheers Dave. Nr Garrigill, Cumbria. 421m ASL. |

No clouds here, but my northern horizon is light polluted. Just about enough aurora in the NW to see slight green colour distinct from light pollution but not a particularly strong display when I was looking. It made BBC weather forecast on the late evening news 10.30pm. Alerts from spaceweather.com and Lancs Uni Aurorawatch. Kp about 6, which it has to be to produce a visible aurora here and forecast to rise: http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/wingkp/24_hour.html Unfortunately it fell back again soon after. Still a nice pre-start for Astronomy Week which begins tomorrow with local events around the UK. http://aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk/ More on Astronomy Week 1-8th March http://www.astronomyweek.org.uk/ -- Regards, Martin Brown (cross post to u.s.astronomy added) |

Definate glow to the northern horizon between the little bits
of cloud. First aurora for years, there may have been other chances in the last year but cloud is PITA... Best show I have ever seen - I was fortunate enough to be driving home from Aberdeen, and there was no problem finding dark places just north of the A96 to view it from. Is there any way of finding out what the peak Kp was, and when it peaked? The best display I saw was around 22.00, and when I got home shortly after it had faded, http://www.softservenews.com/Aurora.htm was saying Kp=6.67, and predicting a decrease to 6.33 and then 6.0. I stayed up until I was almost asleep on my feet, but the prediction was for it to continue to decrease. https://www.facebook.com/anne.burges...3 9973&type=1 - the last four are from last night. I resisted the temptation to tweak the images at all, as even the tiniest available tweak produced a spectacular but unnaturally bright result. Anne |
