Keep your eye on the news. Record-breaking temperatures are quite possible: The humidity is also exceptionally low. My chums in Tucson say it's around 4%. |

In article , says... Yes you are spot-on Alan we know that the USA is far hotter than India. Oh how wrong can I be? I mean that blizzard of 1829 that buried Sabu in Calcutta. People just don't realise ho cold India can be in its winter. Yes. Some parts of the USA are far hotter than some parts of India. Well done. You are getting somewhere. Now. Try and guess which parts of India would be frequented by elephants. Think about what elephants might eat. You know, trees, long green grass, green shrubbery. Where would such things grow? In the cooler bits of India, or in Calcutta? In fact, although most Asian Elephants don't actually live in India, those that do tend to live in the more mountainous regions. Where there are trees. And large quantities of green grass. Those that do live in warmer areas live in the tropical forests. Which are moist. And still 40F cooler than the 120F mentioned in the article. Shall we delve further into your ignorance. We've gone quite deep already and it's beginning to get very dark down there. -- Alan LeHun Oh dear Alan as the Kinks would say, you've really got me there. I mean how can I argue that some parts of the US are not hotter than India and that's exactly where they site the zoos with their Indian elephants included. As you are trying to prove me an 'idiot' could you please for the sake of enlightenment tell me where these overall and for longer, hotter than India zoo's are? That would be good of you. However saying that you've foxed me on the Elephants not actually living in India and only living in the cooler foothills but again you are wrong as quoted from Indian Elephants in Wikipedia. "in the South – eight populations are fragmented from each other in northern Karnataka, in the crestline of Karnataka–Western Ghats, in Bhadra–Malnad, in Brahmagiri–Nilgiris–Eastern Ghats, in Nilambur–Silent Valley–Coimbatore, in Anamalai–Parambikulam, in Periyar–Srivilliputhur, and one in Agasthyamalai;" Here you are Alan. Wiki is your friend https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_elephant Lets have a look at the Indian elephants habitat lets start with Karnataka. Oh blimey Alan they've must have gone and moved it!!! I mean its now on the SW of India https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...or_map.svg.png Okay lets look at Srivilliputhur Blimey they've moved that too to the south. I might have a solution here . Maybe the elephants do live in the northern foothills and commute or simple holiday in the hotter southern regions. All I can say is Alan that article was exaggerated nonsense, the suggestive image of a not being used to hot conditions suffering Indian elephant being cooled down was nonsense. You know full well the point I was making and yet you tried to fight fire with fire or should I say fight ignorance with further ignorance. I would guess that some parts of the US say Texas do get very hot and similar to parts of India but its nothing unusual for these creatures |

What was it suggestive of? And I can guarentee that the elephant in question would suffer greatly in the conditions mentioned, if it did not have the ability to wallow, bathe or shower. -- Alan LeHun But that's exactly what it does in its own habitat if possible, as a drought and heat wave would make them really suffer but in the US zoos these animals are treated like royalty and there is no way that zoo in Phoenix would not keep that animal cool whereas in India there is no such guarantee. |

Why are we talking about elephants? Isn't the possibility of extremely high temperatures interesting enough in itself? Isn't the fact that the 500 mb height is projected to be over 600 dam rather remarkable? I've just come back from the pub where three of us had an animated discussion about recent events. None of us shrieked our own agenda. Just a "look" would have scotched that. I come back here and am confronted with a cacophonous kindergarten where the original topic has been completely lost in a welter of shouty boneheaded ********. Tudor Hughes |
