I seen more of this display than the ones from the end of last month. And
to me it easily out ranked those.
I first spotted it on my walk too work at 5pm in twilight skies - I quickly
found a vantage point away from streetlighting and there it was. Awesome
colours!
It coverered the whole sky with shades of green and white. As the darkness
increased violet/magenta rays were roaming the skies to the south and west,
and the southern horizon became exceptionally deep green, with patches of
red near the zenith. The rays also seemed to be converging at/emanating from
the zenith. Fantastic contrasts of colours. My viewing was sadly interrupted
by my job at 6pm.
Next chance to get a decent look was at midnight. It has died down
considerably now - but the North and North eastern skies have a distinct
pale blue glow, not a colour I've seen with aurora's before.
Brilliant!

It was excellent in Eastern Perthshire.

Not necessarily any brighter than the last lot a few weeks back, but a
lot more red in it. Whilst we were watching it for some time we would
reckon the peak to be at around 19:30. At that time I removed a document
from the car and in a moonless night, and no streetlights about, we
could read it solely by the brightness of the aurora. Trees on the E
horizon were clearly silhouetted against the bright glowing sky.

None of the searchlights or flashing of the last episode, but more
colour.

However, the aurora of similar cause, a couple of years back, was at
least the equal of this one.

I have yet to see one in blue. Beautiful picture of a blue aurora in

Pretty impressive given where you were!

BTW what is the 'vivid' setting on the camera about?

I think my handbook may help here. There are six "Photo Effects" I can
choose from:
Off - that's the one I use
Vivid - Emphasises Contrast and Colour Saturation to record in bold colour
Neutral - Tones down contrast and colour
Low Sharpening - Records with softened outlines
Sepia - sepia tones recorded
B/W - black and white
