What sort of rate do the various colours represent?

Comparing it against the Nimrod output I would guess that the blues are 1
mm, the greens 1 to 2 mm, the yellows 2 to 4 mm the oranges 4 to 8 mm.

The nimrod output has a few single pixel 8 to 16 mm rates but these don't
seem to be reflected on the bbc images - or at least have been lost by
whatever smoothing software its run through. I'll try and work it out over
the next few frames if we get any significant areas of 8mm+ intensity.

The best place to look for this is the Met Office free radar he
http://www.meto.gov.uk/weather/europ...dar/index.html

which has a detailed key (with rainfall rates) he

http://www.meto.gov.uk/weather/europ...adar/tech.html

The heaviest rate shown on the 1445 AVbrief imagery recently is a
small patch 16mm/hour near the Isle of Wight (heading my way!!!)

Slight confusion - I always thought yellow colours meant heavier
rainfall than green?

Somewhat illogically, not on the Met Office 's site, it would seem.
Their colour sequence looks a bit too random for my liking and the
design team should have just a smidgeon of egg on their face

Avbrief is OK, their main five colours being Red Orange Yellow Green
Blue (heavy -- light) which is pretty close to my recollection of
the first five colours of the rainbow, in the correct order!

Sadly Dave, I too have always personally preferred the AVbrief site for it's
honesty and clarity. At least the MetO site is free though !
