The Met Office website still says "No severe weather is expected in the
next 12-48 hours". It would be very interesting to see what would happen
if someone were to sue the Met Office on the grounds that they suffered
a loss after relying on that statement.

.... yes indeed: it's getting a bit silly and hardly reflects credit,
particularly when I think the *forecasters* are doing a decent job in a
difficult situation. Very unsatisfactory.

I think that is what gets at me most. We all know the "private" side of
the MetO is excellent, as those who post in here testify to, but the public
side, as exemplified by that website, is pathetic at times and brings all
into disrepute.
For many on the Internet, the MetO website would be the first port of call
when looking for warnings.

Heavy snow showers here now, BTW, but not settling on low ground. Temp is
+2.3C in Coleraine after +5C two hours ago.

Didn't we have this discussion a year ago, when on several occasions
there were warnings on the BBC's weather pages but none on the Met
Office's own pages? Presumably the Met Office site has a more
restrictive definition of what constitutes "severe".

Default Another new early warning

Actually appears on the met site this time.

Here is an ADVANCED WARNING of Heavy Snow affecting Scotland, Northern
Ireland, North West England, North East England, The Midlands, Wales, South
East England and East Anglia AND Lincolnshire.
Issued by the Met Office at 11:46 on Sunday, 21 December 2003.
Heavy and frequent snow showers are expected to reach northern and eastern
Scotland later this morning and spread southwards along the eastern coastal
strip of England to much of East Anglia this afternoon and evening. Snow
showers are also expected to move into northern Ireland and parts of Wales
today, but will not be as frequent or heavy as those further east.
Overnight, the snow showers may well extend further west into the London
area and the east Midlands. Local falls of several cm are possible with some
drifting, and temporary blizzard conditions in the strong to gale force
northerly winds are possible in the east. Accumulations of over 15cm are
possible in Highland and Grampian regions and perhaps on the North York
Moors, Lincs Wolds and East Anglia.
For inquires regarding this warning - please contact your regional Met
Office.
