Default Looking very mild for January

I don't know what the CET figures are for December so far , but I bet they
were very mild.
A couple of forecasts for January have already been issued and they are
very much on the mild side. One suggests a run at 15C plus just after the
middle of the month.
Forget about snow.

My means are only 0.5 degC above normal so far for December. After the next
few days I expect the mean for this month to be close to average. Not very
mild, but average.

Gavin.
How can you make such forecasts??? When it can all change within 24 hours.
The likelyhood that this winters character will follow the last, is a 50/50
chance and nothing more.
Please lets just take a day or two at a time, for at least some reasonable
accuracy.

Best regards. Len.

If we do get a January or February with a below CET, it will be
*remarkable*. That's not to say it won't happen, of course.

.... mean daily T running +0.5degC here (Bracknell/Tawfield), so not too
exceptional. IIRC, the Hadley Centre experimental fcst for BI for
Jan/Feb/Mar (issued early Dec), was for neutral to a little above
average for that period. I've felt for some time that this winter had an
'Atlantic' look about it rather than a 'Continental' feel, but I could
be wrong ;-)

Martin.

Len is completely right of course. I always have a laugh reading the stuff
on TWO. But then I guess it's like any hobby that becomes an obsession- you
can't see the wood for the trees. I'm as guilty as anyone and I suppose it's
all good clean fun. But as someone who has experienced lots of severe
winters I can only say that I think they are less likely now but cannot be
ruled out by any chart predicting more than 5 days ahead. (and less for
sudden temporary snowfall in January!!)

Merry Christmas to you all.

Dave

That certainly seems to be the pattern so far with just the occasional less
mild day from time to time (one such day middle of next week perhaps?)
