Hi Phil,

I'm assuming an airport very close to the warm sea ? What a lapse rate if
not,
with a broken cloud base only 2500ft above.

Its a small island near Paros & Naxos to the SE of Athens if I remember
right. I went there before you could fly direct from the UK many years
go, - I think the planes still have to refuel in Athens for the return.

But when I went - what I would have given for air conditioning it was so
hot!

I dont believe the locals will be talking about global warming in the
tavernas tonight.

Hi Phil,
Looks like snow and ice will be on the agenda in the Taverns tonight....
Regarding GW, this is becoming the norm in recent years, which I would blame
on changing weather patterns, due to GW (imho).

Certainly quite cold around the isles, too. It is very interesting to point
out that it snowed in areas where it is very rare to snow, like western
Greece (with a warm sea to the west and the mountain range of Pindus to the
west, which divides Greece in two in climate terms). Patras, Aegio and even
Gavdos (the southernmost tip of Europe, an island south of the prefecture of
Chania), Ierapetra and the city of Chania itself are experiencing snowfalls.

The only island pictures I have available right now are from Skopelos
(skopelosweb.gr):

http://www.skopelosweb.gr/hellasweat...pelossnow2.jpg

Now, if it snows in the *city* of Rhodes, this will be unheard
of -literally.

The north of the country remained mainly dry today, apart from eastern
Macedonia and Thrace, where it snowed in the morning. Morning temperatures
were quite low:
Florina: -18C
K. Nevrokopi: -20C
Nymphaion: -22C

Running water by the roads has frozen now and vehicles must be equipped with
snow chains to circulate throughout Athens, at least during the night. I
assume the northernmost suburbs have more problems, as temperatures have
dropped well below -8C at places and snow accumulations have exceeded one
metre of snow. The national road to Thessaloniki has just opened, after
having left drivers in their cars in blizzard conditions for 30 hours just
outside the agglomeration of Athens.
Oh, 5-7 cm of snow on the boats at the harbour of Chania, as I'm hearing
now.

And, I must add to all the above that people's faces were happy today, at
least in Athens. Snowballs were hitting me from all directions (did they
want to tell me something?) and strangerse even started talking about
personal matters.

Well known phenomenon in Holland -- makes me think of the relaxed atmosphere
on the ice; when all Dutch sureface water is frozen; and you can skate in
the open as far as you like:-)).
A "koek-en-zopie" spirit, as we call it!
Enjoy your snow in these extraordinairy circumstances!

Thanks for keeping us posted on these most remarkable scenes Yannis.

It's interesting to hear people in the UK talking about tempertures
being 4.5°c above the norm, I wonder whether the 2nd half of February
may throw us some surprises and bring us nearer to the average by the
end of the month ?

And the volcano in Santorini (from a webcam), but most of the snow melted
there in the afternoon:

more snow can be seen on the slopes on the left.
