Sunday 22/2/04
Hi all,

Just got back from a fantastic week's walking in the Scottish
Highlands based in
Newtonmore. First day Sunday was broken cloud and with broken snow
cover above
2500 feet had a good walk in the Monadhliath mountains to break
ourselves in.
Monday was rainy (fresh snow above 3000 feet) so some of the family
went
climbing in Glencoe whilst we went a short walk. Late afternoon there
was a
noticeable change of airmass (drier and colder). Tuesday dawned bright
with
broken cloud and a smiling Carol Kirkwood had a sunshine symbol over
Aviemore
all day on the breakfast BBC1 forecast. So we set off for the
Cairngorms and Ben
Macdui. However, reaching the top car park at 621m it was snowing from
convective looking Sc giving a cm or so of fresh snow higher up. We
reached the
summit walking in cloud, complete snow cover with icy stretches above
800m and
near the top, light snowfall. Even though we couldn't see a thing the
delicate
compass work required and map reading made the walk interesting as did
the wind
chill with an estimated temperature of -4 deg C at the summit and
15-20 knots
wind blowing the snow around. Coming back the cloud started to break
up to give
the Kirkwood sunshine :-) Wednesday was a glorious day, hardly a cloud
in the
sky and frost all day after a low of around -6 deg C. We went up
Schiehallion
near Tummel Bridge. Bit icy at the top but no problem. Rewarded with
glorious
views of Ben Nevis and the Cairngorms (now clear). But the best was
yet to come
! On thursday we all walked up Ben Nevis in clear skies and light
winds ! Lovely
snow above 3000 feet all the way to the top (4406 feet) and at the top
it felt
warm with hardly a breath of wind and some of the best views I have
seen in my
life. Deep snow cornices about 1m thick and people ice climbing on the
north
side. The Cuillins on Skye were clearly visible as were all the other
Scottish
peaks. That was my first time up Ben Nevis as previous summer attempts
were
foiled by low cloud, wind and rain. Friday was spent mooching around
and coming
back on Saturday it started to snow as we were leaving. All in all the
best week
I have ever spent in Scotland - simply magic.

Oh and Carol, you're forgiven .... :-)

BTW my newsserver at Demon doesn't seem to want to speak to me so I'm
using Google ATM. I'll post my normal forecast on thursday. Does
anyone know a good, instant response newsserver I can use as an
alternative ?

TIA.

Will.

Hi Will,

Good to see your back, the last thing I remember was you were being
blown senceless on Dartmoor :-0, didn't know whether the weather got
the better of you LOL..

Demon's news server is down and out for the count atm, I have reverted
back to what was commonly known as CIS.DFN.DE, it's free, but you need
to register. I forgot how fast it was, about 10 x faster than the
Demon news server and instant when posting.

It tells you everything here.

Snowy cheers

I've just been through the process with news.individual.net and it took
them about 24 hours.
