Default For old Finningley hands ...

I know there are several here who have worked in glorious South
Yorkshire ...

Announced today ... RAF Finningley (03360/EGXI) is to become:-

"Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield" airport!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/s...re/3622143.stm

Apparently .... "Robin Hood, who spent much of his life in the Doncaster
area ..."

So Robin Hood really existed then? A case of 'myth made manifest'
methinks. Still, it'll be good to see the old place made use of.

[ I suppose I should be grateful that it is not going to be called
"London-Doncaster" ;-) ]

Martin.

Marketing again rules the roost Martin. A bit similar to East Midlands
Airport, now called "Nottingham East Midlands Airport", although situated in
Derby, nearer to Leicestershire and a good 12 miles from the centre of
Nottingham.

.... yes, that's the one I was thinking of!!

Drifting off topic I know (but actually relevant when they start
observing), I wonder what the ICAO will be? Sheffield is EGSY, but the
others in the area are in the EGN"" cluster: EGNM Leeds, EGNJ
Humberside, EGNX East Midlands, EGNB Brough etc. I'm not sure if these
things are decided on purely geographical criteria, or AFTN routing
lists .. I could never work out why Sheffield ended up with the ICAO it
did! I could only ever remember Leeds as 'Nasty and Murky'!

Incidentally, whilst looking for ICAO locations, I came up with the
following - interesting site if you are trying to put letters to an
airfield, and has some crude relief maps, and information about the
airfield etc.

They'll be kicking themselves now that they didn't call themselves
"Robin Hood Airport" but let Finningley nip in first.

Very interesting... Actually according to a TV programme, Robin was possibly
a fellow called Robert Hoad who operated in Barnsdale Forest (between
Doncaster and Wakefield). So 'Peel Airports' are perhaps a bit more
accurate than they realized.

Finningley may have a nice long runway but A/C will have to land sideways
when a strong WNW wind is howling off the Pennines.
Happy days ??
Cheers
John

Hi John,

Some quotes for you from BBC News -

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/l...re/3418927.stm
"The airport decided to change its name to Nottingham East Midlands Airport
because it wanted to be associated with a recognisable city."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/l...re/3412149.stm
"Maybe it's the Hollywood effect and the myth of Robin Hood, or perhaps it
is because Nottingham is the biggest city we have in terms of size."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/d...re/3373237.stm
"Some residents questioned in Nottingham have called on EMA to be rebranded
as Robin Hood Airport, pointing out that Nottingham Airport already exists
at a small airfield in"

Joe
