![]() ================================================== ================== This posting expresses the personal view and opinions of the author. Something which everyone on this planet should be able to do. ================================================== ================== 23/6/04 A wild day up here with full blown gales and frequent showers. Around midday my daughter heard slates being ripped from the roof in powerful gusts. As it turned out it was a couple of half edge slates. North Hessary Tor (about 200m higher) was recoding 270/40 knots gust 61 knots and that sort of gust speed would have been brought down easily to our elevation so I estimate we had gusts in excess of 60 knots today. No other damage apart from 100s of broken twigs and branches and defoliation. Lupins have been flattened and a few other shrubs in the herbaceous border look a bit "worse for wear". Not much more rain just 39.2 mm read from 1800 yesterday to 1800 today making a total for the event of 54.0 mm so far. Wind still howling around and strong gusts into gale force but at least the storm force gusts have now abated and should continue to do so as the PVA feature responsible has run away. Nothing out of the ordinary if it were January but in June ? ![]() "Will" wrote in message ... Nothing out of the ordinary if it were January but in June ? A few years ago I recall a June depression that was said to have given gusts up to 100mph albeit in the far north of Scotland and the northern Isles with little of note happening in the rest of the country. ISTR they said it was the deepest Atlantic low on record for June though of course the centre didn't track across the mainland. ISTR they said it was the deepest Atlantic low on record for June though of course the centre didn't track across the mainland. I made these notes (roughly) at the time: can't promise that all the data are spot on. June 2000: 4. A DEEPENING Atlantic depression which tracked north-eastwards between Scotland & Ireland during the 12th and 13th became exceptionally deep for the season, its lowest central PRESSURE of 968 mbar ( J. Minhinick in his email says 964 mbar) being the lowest in the region since June 1944. WINDS averaged 40 to 50 knots for a time in the north & west of Scotland with GUSTS around or above 70 knots (e.g. Lerwick, Shetland = 70 kn; Stornoway, Lewis = 72 kn/highest June gust this station since 12th June, 1973 in record length since 1961.) - unprecedented in June (apart from isolated gusts in exposed areas due to instability features). Fallen trees blocked roads, power lines were brought down and a North Sea oil rig was set adrift in the Norwegian sector. Martin. |

Yes, that must be the one, thanks for the info ![]() 87kn must be as near as dammit 100mph, I was wondering whether I had recalled that correctly as it seems an outrageous gust in June even in an exposed location. ![]() Certainly felt in Norway too. I might have some charts saved from that one. It took down our last plum tree! Only tree I can recall that has been downed by wind in any season on our property. Took several trees with the nearest neighbours. Known as the 'summer hurricane' in Norway. It was strongest here just before 5 o'clock in the afternoon. That's when the Euro 2000 match between Norway-Spain started. Norway won 1-0 by the way... I happened to tape the wrong channel because of the menace going on outside, so the first half got a *very* lousy quality recording :-) Cheers, Bjørn Sørheim, in Norway P.S. The current low is bringing very bad weather to the southernmost part of Norway right now, too. "Martin Rowley" wrote: "Col" wrote in message ... "Will" wrote in message ... Pinhoe Road was a right mess this evening, Will. Reminiscent of what I've seen over the years on the south coast after a good autumn storm. Back home my imitation cacti-like plants managed to remove themselves from their shallow graves; thought they'd be safe for a few months ! Jon. |

Same here, Colin mentions a 57Kt gust at nearby Lee-on-the-Solent (but it's a 30 metre tower lol) and Southampton Airport reported a 42Kt gust - which is more in line with what I felt in my garden. The fence panels and my wheelie bin survived - just! And all this in Wimbledon week, almost unbelieveable. -- Dave Fareham |
