It appears to my untrained eye, that a huge sandstorm is currently in
the north-west part of Sahara desert ?

The SKIRON model would seem to agree - http://forecast.uoa.gr/dustindx.html

Looks like the Sorrocco will be in place when I arrive in Spain next
week. Every one I know keeps telling me it's going to 47°c there next
week. A bit optomistic I think for the coast.

I notice it look thundery over Spain atm, looking at the satellite
image. Also a nearby weather station..

I would call it pessimistic rather than optimistic. After all, surely
no-one could enjoy weather as hot as that?

Today's high resolution METEOSAT visible imagery very clearly shows an
extensive area of dust extending from the Canary Islands to much of
Spain and Portugal and into southern France.

There is a large dust-cloud across Iberia, being advected into the Med
and quite close to the Balearics at 1115 UTC today. The origin seems
to be the Sahara to the E of the Canaries.
