There was a piece about it in the newspaper. Apparently the trick is to
have both the top and the bottom open. Cooler air comes in at the
bottom, forcing the warmer air out of the top.

Yeah, same here. The fan's been working throughout the night for weeks
now :-)

Our fan's have been working at night for a couple of months now!

I just prefer the chilly nights! We have the windows open at night
throughout the year.

Ah ah. Just as I suspected. No wonder so many women were called Flo! in that
period.

Well, it affects me pretty badly (yawn). I too am a light sleeper, and part
of the problem anyway with getting to sleep with the windows open involves
the extra noise (compensated somewhat with earplugs if it's too bad).

For the past week, temperatures have been above 30C when I've gone to bed
(somewhere between 9 and 10 PM usually), peaking at 36C midweek and 35C
yesterday, both past 10 PM.

Trying to get to sleep in those conditions is bad enough, but what's worse
is because I'm a light sleeper it doesn't take a great deal to wake me,
leaving me to try and get off again. The other side effect is that the sleep
I do get doesn't seem refreshing in the slightest, meaning I feel somewhat
dozy after a couple of days of this sort of weather.

Sadly, even having the windows open helps little, as temperatures at 5:45 AM
today when I got up were still 28C up there - atrocious, and it won't take
long before it rises into the 30s again.

The Autumnal wind and rain can't come soon enough for me!

Default Poor Sleeping?

We keep hearing about how these hot and sticky nights mean that we
won't get a good nights sleep, but it never seems to affect me at all.
I'm surprised because I'm a light sleeper and it usually won't take
much to wake me up. How much does it affect others? Leaving the
windows open and sleeping above the duvet is enough for me

As a nightshift worker I have to say it's been hellish trying to sleep
during the day. [...] It's not just the heat though, neighbouring kids
and music all increase in volume on warm days.

You're just getting during the day what a hell of a lot of people in
urban areas in hot countries get all night. I have no problem sleeping
in midsummer in Sydney; in similar temperatures in the US the heat didn't
bother me, but I was kept awake for hours by the godawful 60Hz rumble of
air conditioners in neighbouring houses (supplemented at one point by the
motor noise of two massive industrial fans that my upstairs neighbours
had directly above my head). Rock music and screaming kids can be damped
with earplugs, but at mains-hum frequencies earplugs do nothing.

I lay awake gritting my teeth and fantasizing about blasting a shotgun
round into the intake of the damn thing across the alley.

As Americans like to say but not do, "if you can't stand the heat...".

I'd have every window in the house open but you know what these women are
like (ie from Venus as opposed to Mars)
