Dave, I agree, I'm only excited because I now have an anemometer and
I can see the cups whirling round, LOL.

I guessed as much, when it's windy you can't see the cups...

force 10 - I have never experienced yet at home.

Only once not long after we moved in, there have not been the same
sort of storms since then. Take a peek at:

http://www.howhill.com/weather/1999/events/1224.html

The shed roof took a 25 yard+ flying lesson down the side of the house
clean over a 6' wall, across the road and clipped the 4' drystone wall
the other side. Fun clearing the road of the debris and rescuing
things from the shed that wouldn't appreciate getting wet.

Today's max was 10.4 deg C (AWS). Max gust still only 25 knots...

7.3C up here, very little wind max of F4 odd gust 20mph (17kts).
Starting to get a bit chilly if you are out had to put a fleece and
wind proof on this morning to ward of the -5C wind chill.

Thanks Dave, quite a Xmas eve !

I experienced force 10 (possibly even 11) on Hay Tor early this year when I was
blown over out walking and couldn't get up again and had to move on hands and
knees to a safe spot. To be honest wind scares me a bit up here as there is
nothing you can do, rain and snow I can cope with (and even enjoy) but wind, I
admit, makes me anxious.

Will.

Moderate rain arrived in Exeter around 1830Z and has been continuous
ever since, it's getting heavier at the mo. Current total around 4mm,
wind's dropped out a lot, current temp 9.5C. I'll be interested to see
how much more rain falls oop in t' hills in this synoptic situation
compared with the usual W/SW flow,

Pete

T'was fun, it was the funny noise from the corner of the room where
the AWS wires come in that gave it away. The rain gauge and external
temperature/humidty sensor had also gone flying with the roof,
fortunately the wires aren't that strong so just parted...

Sounds about right for a F10/11, it was a bit iffy out on that
Christmas Eve as to remain on your feet you had to lean into the wind
past your point of stabilty so if it dropped suddenly you fell over,
similary if you weren't ready for a gust you'd be pushed over. Quite
fun jumping straight up and landing 18" down wind though. B-)

To be honest wind scares me a bit up here as there is nothing you

Makes me nervous as well, partly from the roof blowing off but it
takes a lot to blow a slate roof off and it's just been redone. But
also from the windows getting blown in. We have 4 windows that are
single glazed, single bits of glass about 4' square. In a good blow
these are flexing well over 1/2" in the middle by the gusts. It would
be a bit of a problem if one did break...
