Then don't read them, and if your hear them on TV or radio, turn the sound
down. Alas you (nor I) are not in a position to say what terminology

anyone
can/should use.

The first two are not possible.
1) One has to read them to know they are there ... one cannot then unread
them.
2) One has to hear them to know they were said - turning the sound down
afterward does not get them un-said.

3) Of course we are - it is called 'public opinion' and it can have an
effect.

Indeed it can but I'm not quite so wound up about third parties using language
they are comfortable with that perhaps I personally may not use, as language is
a dynamic thing - it it were not, we'd all be thee'ing & thou'ing each other
still ;-) There'll come a time when today's irritating phrases are no longer
used and replaced by some new irritating phrases.

Verily thou art not wrong about that (:
It is true that the situation could be much worse. Instead of persons on tv
(and elsewhere) beginning every other sentence with 'At the end of the day
....' they might start saying things like 'At twenty three fifty nine fifty
nine ...'. This might endear them to Zager and Evans at least (if 'still
alive').

Many languages have happily retained their 'informal you' (thou) and I am
unsure why English evolved to have only a 'formal You' ... that is perhaps a
greater 'crime' than modish speech.
At that I must apologise for the use of 'thou' as I do not know you well
enough to be so informal (:

Not to mention 'x is the new y' ..... I really hate that .... just got a
spam email telling me that in winter 'staying in' is the new 'going out'
..... I screamed very loudly.

I had briefly forgotten ...... 'any-word' + 'gate' !!!!!

Gianna

Sooner the very patronising and irritating phrase 'significant other' is
put in the dustbin the better
