Hello All,

It's that old chestnut, can anyone point me in the right direction for a
table of the sunrise/sunset times of December and January.

Has a woman that I work with was saying that the nights get lighter
after 21st December, when it's actually about a week earlier than the 21st.

Hi Joe

This site does what you want I think. It will show the darkest evening
happening before the solstice, yet the mornings getting darker until the
end of December. Here in Coleraine the earliest sunset seems to be around
the 13th.

Yes, excellent. I was most surprised to see that the earliest sunset
will occur on the 11th December in both Southampton and Portsmouth
(3:59pm), I am between the two. I was equally surprised to see that
Southampton's latest sunrise will occur on New Year's Day!

I couldn't care too hoots about the mornings, so it's great to know
the evenings will start getting lighter in a fortnight.

I wonder if anyone can give the precise reasons for why it gets marginally
darker in the mornings for a week or so after Dec 21st. The late Michael
Hunt from Anglia TV gave a description as to why. However, this was now over
20 years ago and I cannot remember the precise reasons. Apart from the fact
it is due to the fact that the earth's rotation around the sun is not a
precise circle, despite popular belief that it is. I cannot remember the
other reasons.
I wonder if anyone on this ng does know why?

Gavin.

Gavin, Google or similar on "Equation of Time".

Something to do with, as you say the elliptical orbit of the Earth, and
it's tilt, and something called the Equation of Time
