Default Acquiring historic data

I only started recording the weather here in Canterbury last September,
so have nothing to go on when it comes to comparing today's weather with
historical events. I had a hunt around the Met Office website and can
only find daily data for a handful of stations from 2000, but there
would be a fairly significant charge (£2/month) to get hold of daily
data, and there's only 4 years' of it.

What would be the usual way to get hold of historical weather data for
personal use? It'd be useful to know how temperatures like last night's
(-5.3C here) compares to previous March minima and suchlike.

Although not specific for Canterbury, this is an interesting site with
archived date (Dover or Manston appear to be your nearest).
