Is that the same thing as when the mention during high pressure
spells that there is interference?

Not that I have *ever* noticed that, mind you.

There were incredibly strong tropospheric signals into southern UK
from German FM broadcast stations last week.

Something I've never noticed until moving here. Last week on a couple of
days we had a Dutch station taking over some of the FM bands.
However, that was nothing compared to a period some time last summer. I
still can't get over listening to Radio Sheffield since moving here, mainly
for the football/sports coverage. On one morning, not only did the Dutch
station take over the wavelengths, but at one spot in a valley at Fimber,
where you can't pick any station up, out of the blue came the weather
forecast for Radio Berkshire!!!
I thought at first that I was mishearing the forecaster, but the presenter
repeated the station name.

Indicative of the reducing numbers receiving analogue terrestrial TV,
I would think.

Digital terrestrial TV is less likely to be affected, and it is said
there is 40% take-up now. The effect on digital signals would be an
increase in the signal to noise ratio and the quality would drop off
until the picture pixellated or dropped out completely. No more the
wavy lines or sudden bursts of French or Flemish or the VT4 testcard
overlaid on the picture.

But not always, during the aurora on the 29th Oct 2003 all four
channels here had horrdous co-channel interference. ISTR that 3 was
breaking up it was so bad.

I won't be buying a digital TV set, because 5 channels of public
broadcasting are trash. It seems to me that more channels equals less
quality.

I watch very little on the TV as it is, so I won't be missing anything.

Ain't that the truth.

Quantity has gone up greatly, but quality has gone down.

Showing my age, remebering an era when the tv stations closed down
shortly after midnight, channels 4 or 5 hadn't been born yet.

And we got the test card with young girl playing noughts and crosses on
the blackboard (chalkboard, for those that are into political
correctness) on BBC 2 overnight

and public safety warnings telling people to unplug their tv sets from
the wall sockets before going to bed. (no remote controls or standby
modes)
