Thank you, Martin, that's a nice listing! It seems that seasons with the
most ACE not necessarily have the most landfall-storms; and haven't been the
most dangerous. However its only "USA landfall" so no information about the
damage in the Caribbean area; Mexican Gulf or Mexico itself.

In 2005 we've reached the letter "O" three weeks earlier into the season
than 1995 as well, so who knows. The climatological peak for the Hurricane
season is the week around mid-Sept if I recall correctly, so we're not half
way yet.

.... what struck me was the high proportion in this highly-active year
that swung up into the mid-latitude belt, presumably impacting on NW
European weather in a significant way.

We've been talking about this at work and wondering whether a land-
related ACE might show more information. It was interesting that despite
the high basin activity numbers, the number of landfalling storms,
especially the major (Cat 3-5) hurricanes was oddly low during 2000-2003.
Had 2004 not had a major landfalling hurricane it would have been the
first time in a long while that 5 seasons had gone by without a
landfalling "major" storm, which makes it all the more odd had it
occurred in a period when the storm activity was very high.

Turns out that in 2000-2003 a persistent upper level trough was tending
to shift the storms away from the coastline, which seemingly was not in
place in 2004 that allowed the procession of storms to drift in the
Gulf/Florida.

Cheers
Richard

I can think of at least two (either sex) for each of those letters...

Quentin, Quintin, Quentina
Ulysses, Uma
Xerces, Xenia
Yves, Yvonne, Yvette
Zachary, Zachariah, Zebedee, Zoe, Zara

Maybe you can send your alternatives to the Hurricane Centre? Or who-ever
produces and maintains the list of names?

Also, they only use 21 names. Names beginning with Q, U, X, Y and Z

Wilma.

At work we made much of Hugo as one of my colleagueshas that name,
very short in stature but immense character. Now,of course, he has
been retired ( well I think he has) so we make much of that, too. If
bored (during meetings..yawn..) we then move on to the 'fortunes' of
his club Torquay.
I have observed that with names such as those above, the chances of
having another colleague with wind issues, are somewhat remote.
Naturally I have wondered if there was a 'Robin'!
