I took a look at the data: December 1739 wasn't very cold in The
Netherlands. Jan-Feb were about on par with 1963. That explains a
lot I think.
Next to that: The spring of 1740 (especially May) was very cold and
the summer was quite miserable as well. That explains why 1740 was
an "annus horribilis" for the farmers all over western Europe.
