I would like to add:
In article ,
Anne Burgess writes:
Are the differences regional? I'm from the home counties

from Beds who uses settle?
In this neck of the woods we say 'lie' not 'lay'.
You must come from a grammatical neck of the woods, then.
Same at "home" (E.Yorks) and here in N.Wales - but also "stick" and
"settle" with occasional "hold".
I'm with Elaine on that one, but not exclusively around here.
