MET OFFICE STATEMENT ON UNEXPECTED SNOWFALL
MET OFFICE News Release issued by the Government News Network on 14
January 2004

PA WeatherCentre are clearly being extremely magnanimous, not
rubbing salt into this one ... their media forecasts issued mid-morning
yesterday included sleet at low levels and snow over higher ground,
while their local authority forecasts (for gritting) gave 5-10cm for
Powys, and probability of wet snow for Northants, Bucks, Herts,
Cambs, etc.

Clearly, not unexpected to everyone.

Just a thought; how many experienced forecasters have left the Met Office
due to the move to Exeter from Bracknell? I'm not saying this is the reason
for the errors but today's 'unexpected snowfall' event together with the
previous poor forecast on Monday is an unfortunate coincidence at the very
least.
