Default Feeblest excuse heard for closing a school?

I can only remember one time when my school was closed due to the

did warrant it and the toilet pans in the outside loo block did all
crack from the ice that formed.

My school never closed for a single day during the winter of 1962-3,
though admittedly the worst of the snow was during the Christmas
holidays. In my whole school career, I think there was only one day when
snow prevented me from getting to school (and that was in early March
one year).

In my entire school career from early '60's to mid '70's, I only remember 4
days of closed school due to snow!

1) Late Feb 1962 (exact date unknown) after heavy overnight snowfall, Newton
Aycliffe, County Durham, entire day.

2) Jan 1963, (exact date unknown), early afternoon finish, due to heavy
snowfall, same location as above.

3) 7th Feb 1969, early afternoon finish, very heavy snowfall (synoptic
situation of that day often discussed in this NG), Loughborough, Leics.

4) 20th Feb 1969, lunchtime finish, all day snowfall, Loughborough, Leics.

It may have been bad in the Northern parts today and closures may have been
justified up there but to hear reports of Southern county school closures
and rail/air travel delays/cancellations in the South leaves one despairing
just what we are becoming in this Country.

Part of me wishes today had happened last week when the IOC were here and
they could then have seen what a bunch of wimps we really are, only then to
go to NY and see how they handle similar things so much better.
