The quoted figure for Berchtesgarten of minus 43.6 seems to be well below
the figures you mention for Bavaria - it looks a bit suspect to me unless
the station is at altitude. My hazy memories of the place are of a
pleasant lakeside village, which, although surrounded by mountains,
wouldn't seem to be a serious frost hollow. Do you have any info from
more reliable sources on this?

Assuming that you are actually talking about Berchtesgaden ('d' not 'rt' in
the middle) then my impression was of a lakeside village gloomily enclosed
by very steep mountains very close to the lake shore, and I would not be
surprised if it is a frost pocket.
