It is almost certainly a lee wave effect by the Pennines. There was quite
a marked increase of wind speed with height near you (up to a mean of 55
knots at around 3000 feet) and a slightly unstable layer just above
mountain top height - above the low level inversion. The surface 15kn
westerly veered quite rapidly to a very strong NW with height.
