Default 12Z Model Summary - Friday 23rd January 2004

Low pressure (995mb) lies close to Italy, with another low (1000mb)
well to the north of Scotland. High pressure (1020mb) lies towards the
Azores, with another high (1030mb) close to Iceland and Greenland
which ridges south into the Atlantic to the west of Britain. Another
high (1030mb) is settled over Western Russia. Winds across the country
are moderate to fresh northerlies in most parts. All areas will be
cold with sunshine and snow showers, heaviest and most peristant
towards the north and east. Temperatures will be below normal. Beyond
this there is little change with bitterly cold north/northwesterly
winds in many parts, along with some potentially significant snowfall
in places.

(1025mb) over Western Russia. Winds across the country are mostly
moderate to fresh northerlies. Most parts will see a mixture of
sunshine and snow showers, with most of the snow towards the north and
east. 850hpa temperatures range from -14C in the north to -7C in the
southeast. Forecast 2m temperatures range from -3C in the north to +3C
in the far southeast. Beyond this conditions remain bitterly cold as
pressure remains high to the west/northwest of the UK, bringing
bitterly cold winds and further snowfall in parts, especially in the
north and east.

(1025mb) lies over the Azores, with another high (1025mb) to the west
of the UK in the Atlantic, and another high (1035mb) over Greenland.
Winds across the country are mostly fresh northerlies. Many areas will
see sunshine and snow showers at times. Temperatures will be below
normal in many areas. Beyond this most parts turn milder as the high
breaks down and drifts south, allowing Atlantic low pressure systems
to return.

(1040mb) llies over Greenland and ridges strongly south into the
Atlantic. Pressure is also high (1025mb) over Russia. Winds across the
country are fresh to strong northerlies. Most areas will see sunshine
and snow showers, with most of the snow towards the north and east.

and milder in the south, but remaining wintry in the north.

(1045mb) lies over Greenland and ridges south into the Atlantic, where
a secondary centre (1025mb) lies. Winds across the country are mainly
moderate to fresh northerlies, light in the south. Many areas will see
a mix of sunshine and showers, the showers turning increasingly to
snow. Temperatures will be below normal.

Summary:
A very wintry outlook from all models tonight with the early part of
next week looking bitterly cold and potentially very snowy towards the
north and east. Most models keep the cold going through to the second
part of the week, although the DWD model quickly brings in milder
weather and Atlantic systems by midweek.
