Default OT PC Help

Keith, I am no expert but I have built a few PC's.

It could be a multitude of things and I am guessing here, but I don't think
it is a processor fault otherwise it would not boot at all, nor a
motherboard fault for the same reason. Check the processor fan; is it
spinning, if so is it spinning fast (I know it's a long shot).

Windows XP reboots (by default) if there is a serious hardware/software
problem. Have you tried doing a bare-bones boot, i.e., without any extra
hardware attached such as sound-cards (or even graphics card (if there is
on-board graphics)?

Was the computer on automatic updates? Sometimes drivers such as graphics
driver can be updated automatically. If I allow Microsoft Updates to
automatically update my graphics card driver (GeForce FX5200) the computer
throws a wobbly and fails to boot (even if I try and restore to last known
config). The way around it was to boot in safe mode with no drivers except
Windows generic stuff.

If the processor is getting too 'hot' and causing a reboot, try going into
the BIOS and altering/disabling the alarm/shutdown processor is cooking
function. My thinking is that your BIOS could be incorrectly reading the
processor temperature and telling the operating system to shutdown/reboot.

These are all just guesses really but I hope they help.

HELP please.

SInce yesterday morning my 'main' PC has been all but dead, I normally
have
it on 24/7 but when I swtiched on the screen it said "Please insert Boot
Disc". I couldn't find one but tried switching power off then on again.
The
PC then started the usual Windows XP loading with the black screen behind,
it come up with "Window XP' a couple of times before launching into the
Desktop. However, I can never get to the desktop, at about the time it
would
normally get to the desktop the PC just powers down and starts to reboot
itself. I have an added complication with my monitor that 9 times out of
10
won't activate, stays in standby.

I am now back in the reboot circle, tried F8, Safe Mode, Last known good
configuration and Debugging mode, but still the same rebooting cycle.

I swapped over hard drives between this PC and the duff one and the
rebooting sequence was the same, so I don't think it's the hard disk.

I beleive when the processor gets to hot the computer will shutdown and
reboot, something I do experience unfortunately. Motherboard is a ASRock
K7VT4-4X Socket A (462-pin).

Thoughs a
1. Duff ATX Power supply
2. Motherboard
3. AMD 1700 processor duff.

Any ideas? I have used a meter and checked vaults to all the components,
5v
etc.

Or what newsgroup would be best to interrigate?

Many Thanks
