Default OT PC Help

From:

http://groups.msn.com/HardwareJunkie...1&all_topics=0
(Another good one to try is Community Feedback also in MSN groups.)

Get someone to download these as zipped files to their Cd:

Everest Home edition from Lavalys. Beware posting personal information
from it with the computer specs it will tell you (and any helpers
about.)
http://www.lavalys.com/products/down...dlid=2&lang=en

In the mean time try this formula:

1.
First of all open the programmes menu with the start button. Go to
“accessories” and look for “Disk Clean-up”.
Right click on it and send it to your desktop. This can remove all
your temp files which include the cookies that adservers set, without
deleting your cookies and passwords. And it will clean out stuff
that has been thrown in the bin. It will save time opening it as you
aught to run this regularly. Also, set your “Internet Options” to
delete “temp files” when you sign off.

2.
Next go into control panel and see if you have got “Java plug in.” If
so right click on that and send it to the desk top too. If you haven't
got it, get it. Sun microsystems is the place. You need Java Run Time
Environment (Jre) to access the net as ActiveX has been taken over by
them. You can download a load of goodies from there while you are at it.
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download-netbeans.html

Some trojans will reside in the cache of this thing, so every time you
finish using the net, open the plug-in and clear the cache. Or at least
run this one regularly too.

I'd load thesee to desktop to when you unzip them as they will be easy
to find and run from the

3.
Then get CWShredder you then want AdAware, the latest vesion of SpyBot
S&D an antivirus and update them all after downloading them.

4.
You also want a firewall, there is a good free version here.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=388

Major Geeks is a focal point of call for most of this stuff. Most of
these freeware programmes rely on such servers because of bandwidth
pressures. There are plenty of other mirrors but I like to use one
that is running when it's country is not busy. If you lived in the US
you might get better download speeds from Australian or European
mirror sites.

Of course if you already have this stuff or different makes of it
ESPECIALLY NTIVIRAL WARE you will not need the above. Adblockers don't
usually blow each other off but there are a lot of fake ones out there.

Once the firewall is installed and set to the highest security, switch
off your internet connection and run the other stuff in the order they
appear here. Line them up on your desktop and use them every day if
you go online.

So now you should be pretty nearly clear of scum. What you need next is
to sort out what programmes you can get rid of. Stuff in your system
tray and stuff accessing the net that you could stop at the firewall
if you don't need them, are memory hogs and will slow you down terribly.

It sounds like you have a boot sector virus. Chkdsk or scandsk will tell
you you have got bad sectors if you have but using that may cause harm.
It's best to let the security scanners above handle it.

Finally you want a copy of HijackThis:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/
You can post the scan on the forum there for the original writer of the
programme to have a look at your problem. Tell them what you are running
and what the symptoms are.
(I wouldn't mind an e-mail of the log too.)

Here is a list of rogue security programmes sold as scanners by
gangsters:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

And here is a list of good ones:
https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/soft6.htm

Good luck.
